PIDGE: How you doing, Michael?

MICHAEL: I'm doing alright, Clay. How are you today?

PIDGE: I'm doing fantastic. So nice of you to call from down there in North Carolina. Now here's what I want you to do. What all our SPELLBOUND players have to do: I need the promise from ya. I need you to be bound to it that you won't look at your cell phone or your computer when you're trying to spell these words. That's not what Glisteners do. They're always honest. You're gonna do that, right? MICHAEL: Of course.

PIDGE: Alright. You are SPELLBOUND.

✨✨✨

1. Amateur

PIDGE: Now you're SPELLBOUND, my friend, and now we're ready to go. Now hold on before you spell this thing because I wanna give the folks at home a chance to spell along with ya. Our first is amateur. Amateur is from the French word. It means a lover of something. It's a person who pursues an avocation dependent from their source of income. Amateur. How do you spell it, Michael?

Michael spelled amateur correctly.

PIDGE: You nailed it, baby. You nailed it. You're one out of one. Let's try another one. Now don't spell it right away. The word is...

2. Chief

PIDGE: It's Middle English. Anglo-French. Chief. It just means "head."Edward Platt was the Chief on Get Smart. They revealed that his name was Thaddeus, but no last name was ever revealed. He was, indeed, the Chief. How do you spell that, Michael?

Michael spelled chief correctly.

PIDGE: You nailed it, baby. You nailed it. A lot of people want to spell it C-H-E-I-F, but you got it. Now it gets a little tougher as we enter The Spellbinder's Lair.

3. Marshmallow

PIDGE: Oh, that Spellbinder. He wants you to misspell so badly, Michael. I want you to spell marshmallow. Americans buy 90 million pounds of marshmallows a year according to marketplace dot org. How do you spell marshmallow, my friend?

Michael spelled marshmallow correctly.

PIDGE: Oh, you are good, baby! You are good. Lot of people want to spell it M-E-L-L-O. You got it right and you're one word away from glory. How you feeling? You feeling confident?

MICHAEL: I'm feeling good.

PIDGE: Not looking at any dictionaries, any phones, any computers?

MICHAEL: Of course not. No way.

PIDGE: I love it, man. I love you. This last one's kinda tough. The Old Spellbinder.

4. Fluorescent

PIDGE: It's high pressure, mercury vapor lamplight. More economic lighting. Providing less heat. Edmund Germer over there in Deutschland invented fluorescent lighting. How do you spell fluorescent?

MICHAEL: Oh, man. I don't know. I'm gonna try. F-L-O-U-R-E-S-C-E-N-T?

PIDGE: Oh, man.

MICHAEL: No. Incorrect. PIDGE: You know what I love about it, man? It shows me that you were being honest, man, and that means a million bucks to me. Fluorescent. That's a tough one. F-L-U-O-R-E-S-C-E-N-T. You just switched that one. You wanna spell it like flour, but it's fluor. Man. You did great. Did you have fun? MICHAEL: I did.

PIDGE: What do you say to all us Hot Glisteners up here in New Jersey, New York. It's so hot up here. What do you say? Give us some words. MICHAEL: Stay cool, my brethren. I love ya.

PIDGE: I love you too, man. Thanks for playing SPELLBOUND. Wasn't he great? Michael down there in North Carolina. Did a nice job. Wings. 1985.

The Spellbound AccuPlaylist gif of the week is a black and white image. A man with a giant pair of scissors. The man moves from right to left, slashing his way through a giant canvas or curtain. An eye is pictured on the canvas. As the man cuts from right to left, the old eye is torn away, revealing a new eye, now with beautiful and lush eyelashes. The image loops.
