PIDGE: Poor little worms. We used to pick 'em up and put 'em in a coffee can and save 'em for fishin'. Cut worms. Twenty-one minutes in front of 9:00 now. I got him on the line. Are you there, Grubbus?

GRUBBUS: I am.

PIDGE: I got Grubbus on the line.

Grubbus stats:

From Randolph

45 years old

Teacher

Libra

PIDGE: How do you feel?

GRUBBUS: I'm a little nervous, Clay.

PIDGE: Now here's what we're doing. As we play SPELLBOUND, I need you to promise me that you're not gonna use your phone or a computer or anything to spell these words. Just your own know-how and intelligence. OK? Do you promise?

GRUBBUS: Promise.

PIDGE: OK. You are SPELLBOUND.

✨✨✨

1. Truly

PIDGE: Your word is "truly", Grubbus. And as far as truly goes, it made me think of truly and love. It made me think of Lionel Richie. His song from 1982. His first solo single was called, "Truly." I'm truly, truly in love with you girl. I am truly head over heels with your love. Are you in love, Grubbus?

GRUBBUS: I am.

PIDGE: Truly in love?

GRUBBUS: True, true.

PIDGE: How do you spell it, my friend?

Grubbus spelled "truly" correctly.

PIDGE: T-R-U-L-Y is correct! You're off to a great start, man. A lot of people put that "E" in there. T-R-U-E-L-Y. But that's not true. Let's try your second one. You ready? GRUBBUS: I'm ready.

2. Height

PIDGE: The next word is height. Height. Robert Wadlow grew to the greatest height any man ever has. He was eight foot, eleven. Had a size 37AA shoe. From Alton,Illinois. The Alton Giant. Height. How do you spell height, Grubbus?

Grubbus spelled "height" correctly.

PIDGE: You're two for two, man! And you're not cheatin'! You're not cheatin'!

GRUBBUS: No way.

PIDGE: Are you ready to enter the Spellbinder's Lair? It gets a little tougher now.

GRUBBUS: I'm ready.

PIDGE: Here we go.

✨✨✨SPELLBINDER’S LAIR ✨✨✨

3. Necessary

PIDGE: I love the Spellbinder's Lair. Now here's your next word. The next word is "necessary."

GRUBBUS: Oh, no!

PIDGE: Water is the most necessary thing for human survival, Grubbus. Three days. That's about all we can do with no water. And as far as food goes, we can make it maybe three weeks without food. It's not as necessary as water. How do you spell necessary?

GRUBBUS: This one always gets me.

Even so, Grubbus spelled "necessary" correctly. This time.

PIDGE: You got it! You got it! A lot of people have two "C's". N-E-C-C-E-S-S-A-R-Y. That is wrong. You got it right and you got one word to glory. Just one word separating you from glory, man. And that word is medieval.

4. Medieval

PIDGE: You know back in the medieval times, people used eels for money? Children had a 50% survival rate beyond the age of one. They started working at twelve and animals were charged with crimes in medieval times. How do you spell it, man? How...do you spell it?

GRUBBUS: Medieval? Oh, my. Here goes. M-I-...D...E-V-I-L?

PIDGE: Hehe. You almost...aw, man. You almost got it, man. You were so close. Medieval. M-E-D-I-E-V-A-L. You know what I love about you? You're gonna get applause because you're honest. You're honest and I appreciate that. Hey man, we're out of time but you did a great job. What do you say to your fellow Glisteners out there?

GRUBBUS: Hey Glisteners. It's a beautiful day. We got Clay on the radio. Make it happen.

PIDGE: There he goes, man. Great job, Grubbus in Randolph. Let's get back to the music. T-Rex!

Grubbus's final score: 3/4 for a percentage of .750

Total Glistener SPELLBOUND score: 9/12 for a percentage of .750

So far, 1/3 Glisteners have earned a perfect score.

Glistener winning percentage: .333

Spellbound AccuPlaylist gif of the week was the sweet young fellow who passed out at the 2004 Scripps National Spelling Bee at the Grand Hyatt is Washington D.C. Fellow spellers, judges and audience looked on in a calm horror as the young man's eyes bulged right out of his skull before he teetered to the maraschino red carpet below. And if you were 13 years old and had to spell "alopecoid" on ESPN or whatever channel, wouldn't you lock up, too? The Spellbinder's Lair is not for the young or infirmed.

The broadcaster: I've never seen this happen. The poor gentleman. He's um. The young man has apparently fainted on stage. I think he's OK, but...they did stop the clock.

The ending has to be seen to believed. Great job, Akshay!
